MXR-130 and MXR-150 receivers.  These are pin-for-pin replacements for the large 42V and 63V electrolytic caps on the main (MA-508) board of the receiver.
Electrolytic capacitors, especially those made in the 1980’s, age poorly.  They often fail as open circuits, where they lose capacitance which can cause hum, loss of clarity and “punch,” and add distortion.  They can also become “leaky” and fail as short circuits.  This type of failure can cause pops, distortion and power supply failures, that can kill the audio signal entirely.
“Re-capping” a receiver is commonly done for the following reasons:
To repair an existing problem or failure in a receiver.
To restore or upgrade the audio quality of the receiver.
To reduce the possibility of future capacitor failures and improve the reliability of the receiver.
The kit contains 4 replacement electrolytic capacitors to replace the large, cylindrical 42 V and 63 V power supply filter capacitors on the main (MA-508) board.  The replacements for the 63 V capacitors include an adaptor board that allows the assembly to be inserted directly into the 3 pin footprint on the board–this is not available anywhere else!.  In addition, the capacitors’ value is increased, which further lowers the noise floor and gives you added punch on the bass.  The parts are brand new and meet or exceed the specifications of the original parts.  To assure highest reliability, the capacitors in the kit are from a premier manufacturer with a high established component lifetime.
The kit includes:
Replacements for the two 42 V, 8,200 uF electrolytic capacitors on the MA-508 board.  Replacements are 10,000 uF, 50 V.
Replacements for the two 63 V, 10,000 uF electrolytic capacitors on the MA-508 board (with adaptor that allows you to solder the assembly directly into the board).  Replacements are 12,000 uF, 63 V.
A comprehensive installation and troubleshooting guide to aid in the repair and refurbishment of your receiver.
The installation manual gives detailed instructions with photos, showing how to replace the capacitors.  It includes a section on troubleshooting the power supply circuit, which is a common problem with the MXR receivers.  The troubleshooting guide is highly valuable and not available anywhere else.  The manual also shows how to clean the control potentiometers (v
olume, balance, tone, etc) and switches for continued, trouble-free operation.   The installation manual is a full-color PDF document delivered via e mail.

The parts can be replaced by a person with limited soldering skills.  A soldering iron, solder wick and solder are needed to replace the parts.  Use standard safety precautions (wear safety glasses, unplug the unit before soldering, good ventilation, etc) when working on your gear.  When you’re done soldering, always wash your hands, because solder contains lead.  Please note that replacing components will fix the receiver only if those components was the problem to start with!
